Ann Arbor City Attorney Stephen K. Postema at Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys Law Seminar

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – The Michigan Municipal League’s annual Convention got an unofficial kickoff Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, in Grand Rapids during ArtPrize with the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) Law Program and a number of pre-convention seminars.
During the MAMA event, the group named Portage City Attorney Randall L. Brown as President of the organization. Brown has been on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys and on the Board of the Michigan Municipal League Legal Defense Fund since 1999. For the past two years Mr. Brown has served as Vice President of the Municipal Attorneys association. He has been legal counsel for Portage for the past 26 years and the city attorney since 1993. In 2010, Brown was awarded the Portage City Attorney contract for another five years. He is also a member of the Legislative Concerns Committee and has been involved in other committee work dealing with issues affecting municipalities in Michigan. Brown replaces Ann Arbor City Attorney Stephen Postema, who served the last 2 1/2 years as the MAMA president. Postema was also honored for his time of service with the group.
The MAMA organization Tuesday also awarded Gregory T. Stremers as the recipient of its Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award for 2011. Stremers currently represents several municipal entities in St. Clair and Sanilac counties, including the cities of Sandusky, Croswell, Brown City and Marquette, the village of Emmett, and the townships of Lexington and Worth. He was nominated for the award by Brown City Manager Clinton K. Holmes, Croswell City Manager John Espinosa, and Marlette City Manager Lou LaPonsie.
MAMA also honored Attorney Don M. Schmidt, of Counsel at Miller Canfield in its Kalamazoo office, with the 2011 William L. Steude Ethics and Civility in Local Government Award by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA). The William L. Steude Award was established to honor individuals for significant and tangible achievement in the field of local government ethics and civility. Nominees are an official or employee of a member municipality of the Michigan Municipal League, a member of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, or associated with local government. Cooley Law School. The League’s Convention officially kicks off today (Wednesday, Oct. 5), but somepre-convention sessions took place Tuesday, Oct. 4, (http://www.mml.org/events/annual_convention/agenda-2011.html#precon) including seminars about the medical marijuana law, guardiing the public’s checkbook, meetings are us and effectively and safely having a community festival.
